My design builds on the themes of paranoia, darkness, psychosis, guilt, shame, violence and betrayal. I took an abstract and textural approach to the set to build the dark ominous atmosphere. Violent shapes and lines work with the soundscape and soft washes of light to form a psychological space representative of the dark minds, blurring lines between psychosis, appearance and reality and re framing the reality of the play.
It was an instinctual response to look at a dark space. In the same way that light offers protection from evil, darkness is used as a means of covering up monstrous acts and provides an element of disassociation. Fragments of light, sound and shape work together in the absence of realistic set elements.
