Lily Page graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Design, completing a double major of Graphic Design and Performance Design.
She has a predominantly illustration-based practice, and aims to use as many materials and techniques as she can, often prioritising an analogue approach to her art. She draws inspiration from her own engagement in the world of fibre arts (specifically knitting and crocheting), and champions this fusion of art, design, and craft in her practice. She has a particular interest in character design, costume design, and picture book/graphic novel illustrations.
Macbeth is a play in which themes of deceit, obscurity, and the blurred lines between reality and the imagined are key to understanding it. I will explore these themes by utilising the idea of the veil, draping large sheets of semi-transparent white fabric across the stage, creating a fluid, metamorphic stage design. This set allows for the ability to literally and figuratively obscure certain characters, which begs the audience to question what is and isn't real, whose motives are truthful, and so on.
The costumes are monochromatic, either black or white. When in all black - characters remain visible behind the fabric, allowing them no obscurity or place to hide, but when in all white, they blend in - becoming one with the set. The stage is transformative and flowing, the fabric moving to conceal and reveal, becoming increasingly weathered and bloodied throughout the play (along with certain characters' costumes), representing the disintegration of Macbeth’s mental state, his growing paranoia and his descent into tyranny.
