Hi, I'm Karl and I am passionate about creating experimental design outputs that have unique underlying concepts. My process is often very exploratory, using analogue making techniques and finding new materials and mediums to play with. My recent projects have involved learning new skills and hobbies to create physical outcomes, which I then further refine and manipulate within the digital realm. I'm excited to see what outcomes I can create through my artistic process, and how I can evolve it into the world of design.
Shakespeare's Macbeth speaks of the influence of power through personal means. Key elements in the set design are the monumental concrete walls and the manufactured pieces which move in space while suggesting immovability and becoming set in stone. Internal moments where constraint or restriction is felt by the characters allow the set to feel more imposing, whereas in other external moments, the designs can recede. The structured pieces and the dimensional feeling emphasises the internal conflicts and problems that each character experiences.
Through lighting, the personality of the space can be further altered. Claustrophobic, cold, dark, or spacious yet unsettling, the lighting suggests hidden spaces and places of surveillance.
Costumes for the characters inform the viewer of the relationships between each person. Overall inspired by fashion streetwear in a monochromatic palette, the silhouettes present personality and character story and the colours propose relationships.
